I like long games, but, as LT alluded to, I think there can be a problem with them. Your standard 30 to 35 turn game often ends with people with plenty of ammo left and one guy or the other (or both, if they're optomistic) thinking, "With 10 more turns, I could've killed this guy...he's lucky the game ended...if only this game had 50 turns." The idea being that a fifty turn game would let you see 'what would have happened' in the turns following where the 35 turn game ended. However, as LT indicated, what tends to happen is people time their manuevers to the time at hand - people are more cautious, sneak more, and launch the main attack later, so that what ends up happening is you end your 50 turn game at about the same place the 35 turn game ended. In essence, the extra turns happen in the beginning of the game rather than the end, if that makes sense. It's sort of an application of the 'any task tends to expand to fill the time allotted to complete it' principle.
