M60 A2 tank bns 1976-78

A little more information I was able to gather from the net.

Apparently, the initial idea was to have one M60A2 battalion in each division, the remaining battlaions were M60A1's. So unless one is absolutely committed to historical accuracy, you can kind of use that as a guideline. Enough M60A2's were supposed to be built to equip "8 or 9" battalions, 6 of them in Europe.

Where were those battalions?

We have...

1-32 AR 3AD
3-33 AR 3AD (Kind of shoots down the "one bn per div theory" )
1-67 AR 2AD
1-37 AR 1AD

To further shoot down the "one bn per div" idean we have

1-64 AR
2-64 AR
3-64 AR ...all in the 3ID - although apparently these were mixed M60A1/M60A2 units.

Kind of fun, isn't it. FM WarB mentioned that he maybe recalled seeing A2's in the the 8ID, though he wasn't sure. Actually, you probably are remembering correctly though I haven't been able to determine which battalion.

Now for sources. This is information I picked mostly from archived threads from other forums; that is someone at sometime asking the same question - so I can't guarantee the accuracy of what I have. I did run across a website that has what are, in essence, term papers written by officers at the various command & staff schools. I did find one that probably has all the information we need with all the accompanying cited sources. However, to get the entire paper you have to buy it. In this case it's costs $20 US. I may shell out the cash to get but there's no guarantee it really has the info we're looking for. I probably continue looking for some "free" info for a while yet.
