Armor Main Gun Ammo Load Question

If I have been using illumination or smoke rounds in my mortars I always check at the end of a turn to make sure that they are back to HE. If they haven't been changed then you risk using up your valuable illumination/smoke allowance or firing at an enemy unit with harmless rounds.
