Believe me, I studied this topic many times during development so I wanted to get it right.

But perhaps you just are referring to the use of the roundel in general? If so, we simply decided that roundels are cool (I have always liked them) so we try to have the aircraft roundel of the period for the nationality in the "blank box" and turn pop up dialog just to have more symbols and insignia from the period (flags are used on the objectives).
